Table Mountain, a penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Southern Right whales off Hermanus and the winelands of Stellenbosch fill this nine-day trip through the Cape and Johannesburg.
Walk the boardwalk at Boulders Beach, where a colony of African penguins nests among the granite rocks near Simon's Town.
Look for Southern Right whales from the Hermanus cliff path, one of the best land-based whale-watching spots anywhere.
Take the rotating cableway to the flat summit for the view over Cape Town, Table Bay and the Twelve Apostles.
Swirl a Cape red at Boschendal, a Stellenbosch estate dating to 1685, over a picnic lunch among the oaks.
Boat out to Seal Island off Hout Bay to see thousands of Cape fur seals hauled out on the rocks.
Follow the cliff-edge curves of Chapman's Peak Drive toward Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope reserve.
A tale of two coasts
Few coastlines shift as fast as the Cape's. In a morning you can stand on Table Mountain above the Atlantic, then drive Chapman's Peak to the penguins at Boulders and the Cape of Good Hope. The whale town of Hermanus and the wine estates of Stellenbosch sit within easy reach.
Along the Garden Route
Heading east, the Garden Route trades city for forest and lagoon. The limestone chambers of the Cango Caves, the ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn and a private cruise on the Knysna lagoon fill the middle of the trip, with the old-growth woods of Tsitsikamma near the end.
Johannesburg and Sandton
The journey closes inland in Johannesburg, crossing the Nelson Mandela Bridge to Constitution Hill before some downtime among the boutiques of Sandton. It is a fast-moving city with a heavy sense of recent history.
When to go
Departures run October to March, South Africa's warm season. Whale sightings at Hermanus peak between June and November, so an October start gives you a chance of late-season whales alongside summer weather.
Give us your dates and party size, and we'll tailor a Cape and Garden Route journey around the wildlife, wine and city time you want.
Southern Right whales visit the bay off Hermanus roughly between June and November, with the best sightings usually from August to October. The clifftop path lets you watch them from land, with no boat required.
Indian passport holders need a visa for South Africa, applied for before travel, and our team helps with the paperwork. Flights from Mumbai and Delhi reach Johannesburg in about nine hours, with quick connections on to Cape Town.
No. This journey focuses on the Cape and Garden Route, so the wildlife is coastal: penguins at Boulders, seals off Hout Bay and whales at Hermanus. If you want a Big Five reserve added, we can extend the trip to Kruger or a private park.
The set journey is nine days and eight nights, from arrival in Cape Town to departure from Johannesburg. It can be shortened to focus on the Cape, or lengthened with a safari or Victoria Falls add-on if you have more time.
Departures run October to March, the warm season in South Africa. October and November pair pleasant weather with the tail of the whale season, while December to February is peak summer and the busiest time on the coast.
